Houston · Chapter 2

Dr. Anton Lacasse

Dr. Anton Lacasse checks the pill in his palm three times. His scrubs are ironed and waiting on the closet door. By the time he walks onto the floor, his patients will see a man entirely at ease.

At thirty-two, Anton is a first-year attending in hematology at Houston Methodist, where he also teaches. He likes people. He remembers what they tell him and knows how to put a stranger at ease. As someone who lives with hemophilia, he also knows what it feels like to be the patient.

Before the shift

For Anton, being prepared is a way of caring for people. He’ll check again if it means he can give a family an answer they can count on. The harder thing for him is knowing when he’s checked enough.
